Work from the top downwards.

Bring the needle through at the starting point; go down at A (four fabric threads to the right), come up at B; go down at C (four fabric threads to the left), come up at D (four fabric threads down). Go down again at C and back up at D. Continue in this manner for the required length. Turn the fabric around for the next and each following row, working in the same manner.

Where the rows connect, the vertical stitches are worked into the same holes. Pull the stitches firmly.
